Public Liabilityinsurance.
Cover for claims that your work injured someone or damaged their property.
01 · The exposure
When your work meets the public, liability travels with it.
A slip on a site walkway. A tradesperson’s ladder through a client’s window. A delivery that damages a neighbour’s fence. Public liability insurance is designed to respond when a third party alleges your business caused them injury or property damage, including the legal costs of defending that allegation.
02Scope
What this covercan respond to.
A general guide. What a particular policy covers depends on its wording, limits, conditions and exclusions, and on what is declared to the insurer.
- 01Allegations of personal injury to members of the public, clients or visitors
- 02Damage to property owned by others caused by your business activities
- 03Legal defence costs associated with a covered claim
- 04Products liability, where the policy includes it, for goods you supply or install
03What we look at
Where the detailmatters.
The limit your contracts demand
Head contracts, leases and council permits often specify a minimum limit of indemnity. We check the documents you are signing, not just the figure you had last year.
What you actually do on site
Insurers price and word policies around declared activities. Work at heights, hot works, demolition or underground services can sit outside a policy if they are not declared.
Principals and interested parties
Many contracts require the principal to be noted on your policy. We confirm how that is handled before you start work.
04 · Before we talk
Questions yourbroker will ask.
Having these answers to hand makes the first conversation faster and the submission to insurers stronger.
- What work does the business actually perform, and where?
- What limit of indemnity do your contracts or leases require?
- Do you use subcontractors, and do they hold their own cover?
- Have there been any incidents or claims in the past five years?
05 · Questions
Frequently asked.
Is public liability compulsory?
It is not compulsory by law for most businesses, but it is frequently required by contracts, leases, councils, licensing bodies and venue operators. Many businesses cannot win work without it.
Does public liability cover injuries to my employees?
Generally no. Injuries to employees are usually dealt with under the workers compensation scheme in your state, which is a separate policy.
Does it cover faulty workmanship?
Public liability policies commonly exclude the cost of rectifying your own faulty work, while potentially responding to resulting injury or damage to other property. The exact position depends on the wording, so we walk you through it.
